The middle school age is a transitional time from childhood to youth. This stage of life is a crucial time when a child matures in all aspects both mentally and physically. Puberty creates vast changes in the body and the mind, in turn bringing new experiences. Thinking becomes more systematized, consecutive, and mature. The capacity to think abstractly improves. Another characteristic of an average middle school student is an intensified focus on specific subjects of interest. Activities or work that appeals to a teenager can cause the student to become very passionate about a subject which leads them to focus on material for extended periods of time. Their attention is drawn to all things unusual and bright.
The responsibility of teachers at this point lies in selecting promising material and organizing an interesting learning process. Teachers work with students in small groups to discuss life examples of both their peers and adults. This helps students better adapt in larger groups, raises self awareness, and helps students understand social aspects of life.
